Berthoud Hall Exhaust Fan Replacements - Colorado School of Mines

Location: Golden, CO

Construction Cost: $330,000

Completed: 2022

Contact: David Feron, Project Manager, Colorado School of Mines

The Berthoud hall hazardous exhaust fan renovation consisted of an analysis of the existing exhaust fans, systems in which the fans served, and space pressurization analysis of the existing rooms.

Original construction vintage of 1940 has been renovated multiple times throughout the years. ST+B staff surveyed and verified the latest ductwork renovation within the lab space along with surveying the penthouse mechanical room where the exhaust fans presided. The existing supply airflow was to remain as designed in a previous renovation project. ST+B reviewed ductwork material selection and provided new exhaust fan selections with the proper material and coating to withstand the contaminants from the lab work below in the fume hoods. ST+B designed a new stack assembly to replace the existing stacks on the roof providing exhaust at the proper height from the roof line. the exhaust fans served fume hoods in the floor below in which served general geophysics lab use alongside a perchloric acid fume hood. ST+B is currently working alongside Legacy Mechanical to help manage construction schedule, assist in lab user shutdown coordination, and other construction questions that may arise.

ST+B also procured TAB services during project design phase to determine existing HVAC systems conditions compatibility with the increased usage of the space.
